The World Fashion Centre (WFC) is located on Kon. Wilhelminaplein in Amsterdam West close to Lelylaan station. There is a lot of existing housing here, but also new developments still being built. Most homes here are rental and often both spacious and more affordable than central parts of Amsterdam. These points contribute towards why living close to the World Fashion Centre has become an increasingly popular location for both international and Dutch new arrivals in the city.
The World Fashion Centre and the housing around it
The oldest building in the World Fashion Centre (WFC) itself dates from 1968, with a third and final tower built in 1977. Although it may not look busy from outside, there are 400 showrooms in the building. An exhibition hall was added in 2005 where trade fairs and other conferences take place. Many international brands have their Dutch headquarters in the WFC.
Most of the housing here is comparatively new. Holland2Stay has apartments in WFC Lofts, a former office block next door to the WFC. World Fashion Apartments have short stay accommodation across the road, whilst their sister company Skyreach Relocations owns and rents out long-term 2-3 bedroom fully furnished apartments in the World Fashion Apartments complex. The Fizz Little Manhattan is a short walk away at Lelylaan, and offers low-cost accommodation primarily to those under the age of 27. Several other newer developments including the semi-gated Andreas Ensemble are available to rent from the developers themselves. These tend to be rented ‘bare’ meaning no flooring, and reduced fixtures or fittings. For these homes the tenant installs everything themselves at cost and is usually expected to remove all items when they eventually move out.
Great Transport Connections
One atttaction of this area is that it has great transport connections.
Lelylaan station is a short walk from the WFC offering a direct train connection to Schiphol Airport, Leiden, the Hague and Rotterdam. Trains to Amsterdam Centraal and Sloterdijk also provide fast connections to other cities including Utrecht or Haarlem. Lelylaan is also a transport hub for connections within Amsterdam. The metro station is 4 stops from either Zuid or Sloterdijk, as well as having a direct connection to RAI and Bijlmer Arena. Trams 1 and 17 run via Lelylaan between Osdorp and the city centre, with Tram 2 stopping at Heemstedestraat within walking distance. Lelylaan is also a stop on several bus routes.
For drivers, Lelylaan offers good access to the A10 and connecting highways. Several of the rental buildings offer underground parking at extra cost. Spaces can also be rented in the underground car park at World Fashion Centre. Amsterdam’s cycle routes connect well with Lelylaan, with most parts of the west and central city within a 30 minute bike ride.
Green Spaces and Parks
Although much of the housing around WFC is new builds without direct access to a garden, there is plenty of green space within easy reach.
Both the Vondelpark and Rembrandtpark are a short walk or cycle ride away. In addition much of the area alongside the Westlandgracht canal has recently been renovated and improved for walkers, skaters and cyclists especially in front of the Andreas Ensemble. Other green areas including Amsterdamse Bos, de Oeverlanden. The Sloterpark‘s lake and urban beach are not too far by either public transport or bike.
Indoor Leisure Activities
At time of writing, gyms etc in The Netherlands are closed due to Corona. But hopefully all will still be in business when the world reopens.
There are several gyms, yoga studios and similar establishments within a short cycle ride or walk. Most offer membership or single entry prices, and are also available to those signed up with OneFit or ClassPass.
Examples include Wellcome Wellness at The World Fashion Hotel which has a small gym with pool and spa facilities. Circus Lab offers aerial dance classes, and there is Hot Yoga, a Spin Studio and a Basic Fit all on Kon. Wilhelminaplein itself.
Bars and Restaurants
At the time of writing, all bars and restaurants in The Netherlands are closed due to Corona. But hopefully many will still be in business when the world reopens.
There is a small number of bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of WFC. Lely is opposite Lelylaan station and there are other mainly small establishments around. A higher concentration including bars with outside terraces can be found along Sloterkade and in the direction of Vondelpark, Hoofdorpplein and Amstelveenseweg. Other parts of the city can easily be reached by bike or public transport from WFC.
Groceries, Healthcare and other essentials
There are branches of Albert Heijn, Lidl and Action closeby on Delftlandplein, along with a pharmacy. Alternatively residents can order for groceries to be delivered at home, for example through GreenSwapp who offer carbon neutral next day delivery for items including speciality coffee or fresh fruit and vegetables from a local market.
There are a few doctors and dentists in the area, as well as a vet – Vetcare – beneath the World Fashion Apartments. There are also beauty and hair salons, and other stores also in the surrounding areas. At the time of writing, many non-essential businesses are closed due to Corona. But hopefully all those mentioned will still be available when the world reopens.
